The Teutonic Order is a theocracy situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Formed during the First Crusade, the Teutonic Knights were at times based in Acre and, after the expulsion of the Crusaders from the Holy Land, in Hungarian-Transylvania, before finding renewed purpose in the Polish-backed Prussian Crusade of 1230.

Decisions[edit]

Execute decision.pngReform into Prussia

The age of crusading knights is fading fast. There will come a time when we no longer stand to gain by holding on to the trappings of a monastic order. Besides, the Grandmaster would much rather be a Duke... or King. By reforming into a secular state, we can revitalize our administration and gain the respect of our neighbors.

Execute decision.pngElevate Bishopric to an Archbishopric

As a Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire we have a much greater political power than the title Bishop would normally imply. Let us make use of this influence to convince the Holy See to elevate our Bishopric to an Archbishopric.

With the ties to Rome cut we no longer have a place in a bigger Christian hierarchy. Perhaps the faithful would be just as well served by a Monarch as they are by a [Root.Monarch.GetTitle]?

Execute decision.pngSecularization (non-Protestant)

[Root.Monarch.GetTitle] is a fine title but it is time we stood on our own legs and used the influence we have in this state to build something stronger. However pious our state may be we should seize these lands for our our own descendants rather than risk the appointment of an incompetent successor.

Strategy[edit]

It is pretty much required that Poland appoints a local noble, instead of getting a personal union over Lithuania. This allows you to separate peace Lithuania (and annul their inevitable alliance with Poland). As for early allies, Brandenburg and Bohemia, as well as the Livonian Order are good choices, if they haven't rivaled you. Maybe you can get an alliance with one of the great powers (Kalmar Union, Austro-Hungary, or Muscovy).

Expanding west into the Holy Roman Empire is pretty much impossible (unless you somehow manage to join), but there is lots of heretic land to the east. It is recommended, even though religious ideas are good for converting heretics, to change religion and form Prussia. The Prussian ideas (and monarchy) easily allows you to roflstomp the huge manpower of the Slavic kingdoms. Then you can turn around after a few centuries and take on the entire HRE, and maybe even form Germany.

If you decide to try to expand westward however there is a way to do this. You could always join the empire. The teutonic order is small enough to join the HRE but just improving relations with the emperor wont do the trick. You need to send the emperor a large amount of money and get the biggest relation improvement you can get. Then you will be able to reach +148 relations and join the HRE. You do this by adding your capital (marienburg) to the HRE. Then the high dev provinces of the HRE are wide open and you don't need to fear an attack from the PLC because that would draw in Austria and their allies. If a weak emperor claims the throne, then strong alliances will be neccesary. Getting country's like Bohemia on your side will allow for some good defence and you could even get an alliance with Denmark. DO NOT ALLY the Livonian order as the PLC could attack them and indirectly you. Allying any nation outside the HRE that could be a possible target of the PLC is a risk in the beginning of the game. Once you have grown strong enough or the PLC is in a devestating war you can attack the Poles and take provinces and money.
