Hungary is a large nation in Eastern Europe. It borders numerous nations, most importantly Austria, the Ottomans, and Poland. Hungary starts with an interregnum.

Missions[edit]

Hungary's missions focus on reconquering lands, should they be lost.

Military power.png Return Transylvania to the fold

Transylvania has forgotten that they are supposed to be part of Hungary. The Lord of Transylvania must bend his knee to the Hungarian crown.

Events[edit]

Main article: Hungarian events

Hungary's events are centered around various historical events in their history, with many of them focusing on their personal union with Austria. Additionally, Hungary gains a number of events related to one of its greatest kings, Matthias Corvinus.

Decisions[edit]

Execute decision.pngAbolish the Black Army

The Black Army is a source of constant expenses and is detested by our nobility. Loyalty bought with silver can be lost just as cheaply. Let us do away with the Black Army and instead let the reliable armies of the realm fight for us.

Strategy[edit]

Despite Hungary's large size, as of the 1444 start it is a country in severe turmoil. With no king (meaning no wars and few monarch points), a mix of completely contrasting religions and cultures, and three of EUIV's most rowdy neighbours in the form of Austria, Poland and the Ottomans, Hungary is in an awful position. However it is this awful position that makes it one of the most fun and versatile nations to control in the entire game.

As stated earlier, Hungary starts without a king. At some point during the first few years an event will fire, giving you the option to either make your general Janos Hunyadi the new king, or appoint a member of the Von Habsburg family. It is highly recommendable that you choose Hunyadi, as whilst a Habsburg ruler will improve relations with Austria, it will also give them a CB to subjugate you. With this in mind, early alliances should be made to counter Austria as opposed to the Ottomans. Poland (if they don't set you as a rival) can be an excellent choice, as they are often hostile to both the Ottomans and Austria. Venice, Bohemia and Bavaria are also solid choices, with Venice, much like Poland, often rivalling both enemies. These alliances should be more to deter an invasion than to start one of your own.

With solid alliances in place, and hopefully the beginning of the reign of a new king, expansion into the lesser nations of the Balkans and Caparthia can begin. Wallachia should not be directly conquered, but should be made a vassal either by diplomacy or force, then made into a march. This will secure your southern flank against the Ottomans in the case of an invasion whilst you are at war with Austria, and it is recommended to give the province Temes to them so there is no easy invasion route for the Turks. Your next step should be to invade Bosnia and then Serbia to claim as much manpower and tax as possible. Both can be conquered in a single war, as long as they are not allied to one another. If Albania is somehow still independent (very unlikely) then vassalise them too and turn them into another march. If allied with Venice and Poland, now is the time to attack Austria! Allow Venice to take Gorz, and Poland to have some territory in the north, whilst you take as much territory on your large shared border as possible. Take as much territory as possible in the peace, as although it may cause some instability for you, destroying Austria as a major power will leave Hungary in an excellent position for expansion. Pushing peacefully into the Italian peninsula is a good option.

The easiest way to do this is to support Neapolitan independence from Aragon, then help Naples crush the Catalan foe, hopefully enabling them to take back all of their cores in the process. Their dynasty will be very weak, with no heir, so secure a royal marriage as soon as possible, and there will be a high chance of the king of Naples dying, starting the Hungarian-Neapolitan Union. From here, use Naples to expand up the boot of Italy as far as Tuscany, then turn your attention to the Ottomans. By this time they will probably have conquered much of the near east from the Mamluks, and may even have pushed into Africa. They will also likely have taken lands from the nations of the Caucasus and the Qoyunlu hordes. Only invade if both Poland and Venice (or two other powerful allies) will come to your aid.

Take as much land in the peace as you can (right the way up to the 100% warscore cap) then immediately release Greece/Byzantium as a vassal, preventing you from becoming overextended whilst also allowing you easy future conquests through cored provinces. Once all of Greece/Byzantium's cores are regained, annex all your vassals, move your capital to Constantinople, and from this point on the world is your oyster! Trying to become ruler of the HRE is a good step to take, enabling you to diplo-annex the OPM's of the HRE. Equally you can press your advantage against the Ottomans, taking control of large areas of the Middle East, launch a naval invasion of the barbary states through your lands in southern Italy, or even press through Lombardia to take down France. Colonisation is also a viable route at this point in the game, especially if you take Suez from the Mamluks/Ottomans, as most of the worthwhile American Colonies will be gone. This will enable you to control Eastern and Southern Africa, India, the Spice Islands, Australia and even Japan.

Recommended ideas for Hungary in the order in which they should be selected are: Influence, Aristocratic, Diplomatic, Offensive, Economic and trade, leaving the final two slots for options such as Exploration, Expansion, Naval or Maritime. Religious ideas can also be useful early on in order to convert Eastern Hungary to the catholic faith.
