Hesse starts the game as a Monarchy situated in the centre of the Holy Roman Empire. Hesse is situated in Northern Europe in the Westphalian Region. It is bordered by Saxony, Brunswick, Cologne, Nassau, Frankfurt, Mainz and Wurzburg. Hesse is also in an excellent position to form Westphalia, getting an early Constitutional Monarchy with a Parliament.

As the ideas of the Enlightenment are sweeping through Europe, we may choose to embrace them ourselves in Westphalia. Our future model state will feature ideas as revolutionary as equal rights for all male population, freedom for serfs and emancipation for the Jews, as well as enabling of free enterprise through abolition of socage and the guilds.

Hesse starts in an interesting position in the Holy Roman Empire. It is a landlocked state surrounded by many smaller nations. While Hesse is one of the larger nations within the Holy Roman Empire it should still watch out, as its starting provinces are quite poor. This means that the base tax of Hesse does not differ all that much from the nations around it.

Try to ally with a major continental power like Austria or France. Hesse will accumulate a lot of aggressive expansion and will need to have an ally to fight against a possible coalition. First fabricate a claim on Nassau. Nassau normally has no allies making this an easy start. Ally with Cologne, and use whatever strength you have to fight Brunswick. From there on, Hesse should be a stronger minor country, and if managed right will have little to no aggressive expansion. Now, time to try and take the Hannoverian region. Start by expanding into the remnants of Brunswick and Munster. If one has grown more powerful than the other, target the weaker one first. As Hesse continues to expand, remember that the eventual goal will be to become the major power in Northwest Germany. After securing some land in the Hannoverian region, Hesse should have a good position to sit and wait. Hesse is not a strongly trade based nation, so land will supply the majority of Hesse's income. Because of Hesse's ideas, developing Hesse and building tall can be a valid strategy as well.

Quantity ideas is a good first Idea to improve the military. If this doesn't seem right, take economic ideas to boost economic growth and development. Take religious ideas as the third idea group, to be able to combat either Protestantism or Catholicism. Reformed is an interesting religion and can be overpowered at times, but the player has to ensure that the Peace of Westphalia happens in the HRE. From here Hesse should be a dominant power in Germany with little threat from either Austria or France.


Hesse has an exclusive achievement, Hessian Mercenaries, in which they must maintain at least 50 regiments of mercenaries at the same time.
