This article discusses the three types of land units[1] – infantry, cavalry and artillery – that make up an army, and their different models throughout the eras of the game. Land units are the main resource utilised in land warfare.

The core of any army, infantry are required in order to hold the main line. All infantry have 1 pip in maneuver.

  • +2.5% with Independent Daimyo government.
  • +5% as Confucianism Confucian with Shintoism harmonized.
  • +10% as Mayan.png Mayan with the Central Armories reform.
  • +10% as the Emperor of China with the Boost Officer Corps decree.

Cavalry.png Cavalry[edit]

Cavalry is good for flanking once the main line has been filled, but are much more expensive than infantry. All cavalry have 2 pips in maneuver. Cavalry costs 2.5 times as much as infantry. They are more powerful than infantry, especially during the shock phase of combat.

If cavalry makes up more than a certain proportion of an army (ignoring artillery), that army's regiments will get a -25% penalty to military tactics due to "insufficient support". The exact proportion depends on tech group: 50% for most, 60% for Eastern, 80% for Muslim, and 100% for Nomad. Except for Nomad, the actual proportion should be lower than this since infantry tend to take higher casualties (and are also much cheaper).

Native American tech groups have no cavalry until military tech level 6 (historically, the horse was extinct in the Americas until its reintroduction by the Europeans).

Ratio[edit]

Outside of technology groups, there are a few rare modifiers that increase the amount of cavalry an army can have relative to infantry before it starts taking insufficient support penalties.

Artillery.png Artillery[edit]

Total artillery pip compared to tech level

Artillery not only fight in battles like infantry and cavalry but also speed up Sieges.

Unlike infantry or cavalry, artillery can fight from the back row, attacking with 50% of their combat power. Additionally, artillery regiments bestow their defensive pips to the regiment in front of them. Artillery helps defend the unit in front of them with half of the artillery's Defensive Shock/Fire. During the Age of Revolutions.png Age of Revolutions, the ability Improved Artillery Range can be purchased to increase the damage artillery deal from the backrow by +20%.

However, Artillery takes double damage when attacked (if it gets moved to front rank). Hence artillery are best used to provide supporting fire from the second line.
